In 1891, we were founded as a women's college by Charles Duncan McIver, back then we were known as the North Carolina Industrial School for Women. We are among the three founding members that formed the UNC System. In 1963, we became coeducational and took on the name of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Today, with nearly 20,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff, UNCG is the largest state university in the Piedmont Triad. The campus has grown to include 30 residence halls and 27 academic buildings on 250-plus acres.
Our university as well as our academic schools & colleges, faculty, and staff have been awarded numerous accolades. UNC Greensboro is voted No. 1 in NC & Top 25 Nationally for Social Mobility by the US News & World Report. We were also nationally recognized for advancing the success of First-Generation College Students, recognized as a Military Friendly School, and received the Diversity Award by Insight into Diversity's Higher Education Excellence.
